Multidisciplinary Rotating Internship, (1982-83)
I was invited in 1998 by the then Vice – Chancellor Dr. S. Chandrashekar Shetty of the newly established Rajiv Gandhi Health University (which currently oversees UG and PG medical education in Karnataka State of India) to frame a curriculum for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Ophthalmology which would serve as a guideline to all Medical Colleges in the State. The syllabi had to be drawn out keeping in mind current National Blindness Control priorities, the varying time allocation by the various participating Universities for this subject, particularly the UG curriculum and finally to decide on a minimum expected skill and knowledge requirement at both the levels.
In 1998, I was invited by the Director of the Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India Dr. S.S.Badrinath to be a member of the Ethical (Sub) Committee of their Scientific Committee. This committee is a broad based nationally derived committee consisting of ophthalmic experts from all over India, practicing lawyers, retired judges, basic scientists actively involved in research and members of various religious groups. The committee served to evaluate all research protocols presented from all possible angles and prevent inadvertent violation of ethical considerations in research. The committee usually met with the main scientific committee for deliberations held every 3 months or so, or as extra ordinary meetings when major issues had to be discussed urgently. Needless to say, this was challenging because it involved personal research into every topic I was invited to discuss, sometimes well out of my fields of interest. In addition to discussing the purely ethical angles involved all members were encouraged to contribute their own ideas on modification of protocols, extrapolation of outcomes for further research etc. I continued to be a contributing member until I left for Australia in 2002 for an International Fellowship. On return from Australia in 2003, I was reinvited to join the deliberations by Dr. Surendra the current Medical Director.
Also, since 1997, I was invited by the Chairperson of the Scientific Committee of the All India Ophthalmological Society Dr. Babu Rajendran to be a member of one of the several panels to screen and evaluate all Free Papers submitted for presentation at the National Conference held yearly. I have evaluated both Anterior Segment Presentations and Orbit and Neuroophthalmic presentations in subsequent years and have co chaired a few Free Paper sessions at the National Conference.
